"Each mind has its own method" -Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Emerson Academy is a unique small school located in Studio City. We provide a compassionate, yet challenging learning experience for students in elementary, middle, and high school. The Emerson Academy's curriculum and approach is dedicated to promoting self-esteem, academic confidence, and preparing students for a college career.
Our approach at the Emerson Academy is project based, with an emphasis on research skills, analysis of literature, and group discussions. Our curriculum exceeds the California State Standards and the National Standards, and includes all requirements in math, English, science, and social studies, as well as foreign language requirements, hands-on science labs, ancient language translations, art history, drama, and physical education.
Becoming a well-read student is a primary focus at The Emerson Academy. Students typically read one to three books per month, and are encouraged to supplement with outside reading. Students read a variety of texts and develop the critical thinking skills needed to engage in both fiction and non-fiction. Through intensive classroom examination and discussions students explore and digest these written materials with a resulting enhancement of student vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence.
Students at the Emerson Academy become proficient in all genres of writing. Students write weekly essays and short stories. Students produce a variety of expository texts, exploring persuasive writing, historiography, and autobiographical genres. Every month students are required to produce a longer term paper based on history, philosophy, or science. Moreover, students explore dramatic themes in writing. Beginning in high school students choose to focus on writing plays, screen plays, and novellas.
The curriculum focuses on age-appropriate, conceptual mathematics which is designed for both beginning students and experienced practitioners. Concepts in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and calculus are emphasized. All math instruction meets States and National standards.
Students have the opportunity to study ancient and modern languages at a variety of age- appropriate levels, including Spanish, German, Mandarin and Latin.

Philosophy includes discussion of ethics, morals, logic, and world religions. The students also study American history, ancient history, and world geography for each grade.
